At the Church Hill Peoples News (CHPN) website, there was talk about having volunteers like the scouts, going out and clean this cemetery up. Years ago (along with Woodland cemetery) it was one of the only places African Americans could be buried due to segregation. Evergreen is the largest black cemetery in Richmond and was owned by a black funeral home (probably Manning). Today, the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation Department are the owners so if you want anything done, speak to them. It is a total disgrace and a lot of vandalism is going on including dumping bones out of their coffins. At this late stage I am not sure just what can be done with the graves along the road as you have 30 foot trees growing on many. I know it is "city funded" but apparently none if being channeled to this cemetery. Contact the City Council and others to voice your opinions!

Rated less than 1 star due to the total lack of concern by the city or even the people who have love ones there for not doing something themselves!

The sad part of this is that Maggie L. Walker is buried there and believe even her grave has been desecrated. She was the very first woman in the United States to become a bank president and is also African American.

This is really the most desolate, most lonely, most decrepit place in this city. The open graves, overgrown with ivy and kudzu vines, overturned and broken markers make this a real disgrace to the city of Richmond. To add to this, the "modern" section where plots are apparently still being sold by somebody are very poorly maintained and will soon be in as bad a shape as the older section. This cemetery was planned to be the African American answer to Hollywood Cemetery, and probably once looked a lot like it. Eighty years of neglect, though, have made Evergreen the saddest place in Richmond.

Note: the visitor should not go out there alone as it is not patrolled by the police and is far off the beaten track. A lot of people seem to be either just roaming around or dumping trash out at Evergreen and are best avoided in either case.

Please note that Eric below is not correct: the cemetery is privately owned and not "city funded." You want to complain? Google the name of the cemetery and call the number listed - it is the owner.
